US Wins the 2022 International Mathematical Olympiad
21-Year Drought Ends
Chiang Mai, Thailand
In a surprising turn of events, the United States has won the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), ending a 21-year drought. The US team, coached by Carnegie Mellon's Po-Shen Loh, tied for first place with China, marking China's first loss in a world math championship in 20 years.
The IMO is a prestigious annual competition for high school students from around the world. This year's competition was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and featured over 600 students from 112 countries.
The US team's victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its members. The team's success is also a sign of the growing strength of mathematics education in the United States.
The US team consisted of six students: Mark Chen (Phillips Academy, Andover, MA), Justin Li (Monta Vista High School, Cupertino, CA), Michael Kural (Bronx High School of Science, New York, NY), David Stoner (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Alexandria, VA), Jeffrey Xiao (Plano West Senior High School, Plano, TX), and Eric Xiao (Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, NH).
The IMO is one of the most prestigious mathematics competitions in the world. It is open to students who are under 20 years old and have not yet entered university. The competition consists of two days of exams, each with three problems. The problems are extremely challenging and require students to use advanced mathematical skills.
